Long ago, the Mexihkah goddess Mayahuel was locked away by her protective grandmother to keep her life-giving plant from the world. The gods determined to send Quetzalcóatl to retrieve the plant for humankind. Convincing Mayahuel to run away. They fell in love and traveled the earth, but her absence was soon discovered. To hide, they transformed into her sacred plant, but Mayahuel’s siblings found them, and her grandmother tore the plant apart, destroying Mayahuel.

Quetzalcóatl survived and returned to his true form, in grief. He gathered the scattered remains of his beloved and planted her gently in the earth, watering the soil with his tears each day. Time passed, and the magical plant rose once more strong, sacred, and eternal.

Though Mayahuel never returned to her divine form, her spirit lived on, woven into every fiber of the Maguey that now graced the land. And from then on, the Maguey gave freely to humankind.
